Studio Buratino is the graphic design and sound practice of Sonya Ishimnikova. Buratino is Russia’s very own Pinocchio, originating from A. N. Tolstoy’s 1936 fairy tale The Golden Key, or The Adventures of Buratino, which is based on the 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. In the Russian version, Buratino is a boy who lives in a beautiful fairytale land, spending his days singing nostalgic songs with a distinct Soviet melancholy.
I chose this name for my practice because it aptly captures the elements I try to reference and evoke through both graphic and sound design. My work draws on historical approaches, eclectic and modernist expressions, and contemporary sensibilities. It is considered, textural and a tad playful.
There is something to be said for the practice of translation. Just as Tolstoy began to reimagine the world of Pinocchio after losing his copy of the book, designers and makers spend their time referencing and reimagining others’ work, translating potentially elusive ideas into concrete, easily understood concepts.
Using analogue and digital tools, and through research, ideation and experimentation, I translate briefs to produce work that I hope resonates with and captures the essence of my clients’ aims. I approach my work with care and consideration, often looking for the one aspect that will help a project stand apart from the rest.
My work spans community, culture, sound, fashion and art. I believe ideas exist to be shared, cultivated and understood.
